Elegantly bound in unsigned full contemporary forest green morocco, heavily gilt extra, gilt and blind-stamped ornamental frame side panels, with insets of gilt floral elements and lyre devices, a.e.g. Engraved head and tail-pieces. Extremities rubbed, with short crack at crown of lower joint, bound without ad leaf, inner hinges cracked (but sound), some foxing and offsetting from images, yellow coated endsheets stained, otherwise about very good. First illustrated edition, with fifty-five vignettes engraved after designs by Turner, Stothard and others. Turner's "delicate and graceful vignettes, which are miracles of fine detail, seem fairly to float upon the page" - Ray. A uniform edition of Rogers's POEMS appeared the same year. RAY 13. Contemporary full polished Spanish calf with six spine compartments between raised bands. Red and green morocco spine labels in second and third compartments with gilt-tooled series title in one and the names of the authors, Desmoulins, Vilate, and Méda, in the other. "Paris 1825" is gilt-tooled at tail of spine. Remainder of spine is densely gilt-tooled. Gilt rule border on each board. Board edges are gilt-tooled; turn-ins are blind-tooled. All page edges red. Six volumes complete. -- Includes frontispiece portrait, facsimile letter, plus name index in v.6. -- Hardcover, full leather with elaborate spine decoration, all edges marbled. Condition: very good minus (covers are worn at corners and scuffed, some more than others; page are bright and white, couple wrinkled). -- Retz lived in the political and ecclesiastical turmoil of 17th century France, and recorded his experience in these memoirs, including the court of Louis XIV and the Fronde civil war. Includes a long poem during Retz' stint in prison. -- UNIQUE COPY: This set has the bookplates of "Eug. de Castro" and 3 volumes have his SIGNATURE, presumably Eugenio de Castro (1869-1944), the famous Portuguese symbolist poet (streets and schools are named after him).

With 22 portraits engraved on copper and 33 full page illustrations including the frontispiece. Hundreds of illustrations with the text. Plates have tanned or browned with age. The plate opposite p. 62 has a chipped outer edge. Maroon cloth with gilt decoration - a garland surrounding the crown of France inside ornate borders. The endpapers are similarly decorated. Some wear at the head and tail of the spine. Corners a bit bumped. All edges gilt. Interesting picture book illustrating this period of French history and culture.

Spines have five raised bands, red morocco title labels, compartments ornately decorated in gilt. Some marking and slight worming to boards. Spines rubbed with slight wear to head and foot. A couple of volumes have slight cracking to joints but all boards are firmly attached. Gilt decorated board edges and turn-ins. All page edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Very tight bindings in excellent overall condition. Clean pages throughout. French language. All 30 plates are present and in first class condition (one plate in Vol. V has been bound in upside down.) London: John Wilkie, 1775. 2nd Edition . Very Good Plus. 5 x 8.25 inches (13 x 21 cm). Recent quarter black morocco leather binding with marbled boards. Spine has five raised bands and gilt title. Light staining to lower corner of first few pages, half title page has three small holes to the inner margin and an ink spot, small mark and hole to outside margin of title page, a couple of light marks elsewhere but text is generally in very clean condition throughout. A couple of text pages have slight loss to the margins, page 39/40 has a tear to the centre of the page with very slight loss (no loss to text), there are also a few corrections to the text in old ink (these are not noted in the errata.) Leaves C3 and C4 (pages 13-16) are very tightly cropped to the outer margin, on p13 the text runs right to the edge of the page but is complete.
