From its romantic style it is hard to know whether or not to believe the tale which was supposedly told by David Irwin, 23 or 24 when he arrived half dead in Baker Lake in what is now called Nunavut, the Inuit portion of what used to be the Northwest Territories. Irwin had made his way by dogsled and sledge from west of the Mackenzie River to Melville Island in search of artifacts from or tales about the ill-fated Franklin expedition in the 19th century.
