"Electrical engineering was in its infancy: the incandescent electric light had been demonstrated in 1879, and the demand for electric power, leading to the rapid development of centralized power-generating stations in the next two decades, was just beginning. Despite his lack of electrical engineering knowledge, Kapp was engaged in 1882 by R. E. B. Crompton (1845?1940) as manager of his Chelmsford works. He became involved in all aspects of the design of electricity supply systems and patented a number of inventions jointly with Crompton. While with Crompton, Kapp began writing technical papers and articles on a variety of electrical subjects, which he continued throughout his life." - Oxford DNB.
