Description:
Charlottesville, Va: University Press of Virginia, 1973. Hardcover. G+ (DJ has some wear at head of spine and is also slightly soiled; interior is quite nice.). Brown cloth, gilt letters on spine, gilt decoration on front cover, goldenrod paper dust jacket, 237 pp., some BW illus. "Marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the American Academy in Rome and records its history since its founding in 1894 as a school of architecture. ... The American Academy is the realized dream of a handful of private citiziens inspired bytheir comradeship in organizing the presentation of America's contribution to the fine arts at the Chicago World's Fair. That group resolved to create a center, amid the classical traditions of ancient Rome, where young Americans of promise could study and create in the arts. Their success in achieving this end not only is a tribute to their ardor, persistence, and self-sacrifice but represents American private enterprise in its highest terms." (dj).
