by [Brown, John J.]

Condition: Original blue cloth with gilt angling motifs on upper cover, repeated in blind on lower, spine titled in glit. William Van Winkl

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1857. Fourth Edition, revised, corrected, and greatly improved (i.e., fifth edition by Bruns' reckoning). Profusely illustrated. xii, [9]-332 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Original blue cloth with gilt angling motifs on upper cover, repeated in blind on lower, spine titled in glit. William Van Winkle bookplate. Spine ends a bit rubbed, frontispiece with some foxing, else clean and bright, overall a very good plus copy. Fourth Edition, revised, corrected, and greatly improved (i.e., fifth edition by Bruns' reckoning). Profusely illustrated. xii, [9]-332 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. A scarce book, ("seldom offered"--Bruns) one of several editions by Brown, a New York City tackle dealer whose shop, Anglers' Depot, was one of the few such then existing in the U.S. His book draws heavily on English works and is not very accurate in its description of American species, although the Second Part contains valuable information on American fishing localities. An important book in the history of American angling. This edition, the last edition published anonymously and also the last of several editions identifying themselves as the Fourth (published in 1849 and 1850). This is the second appearance in print of the Second Part (which was originally added to the third edition of 1849). As Bruns notes, the lithographic title page to the Second Part is not present here though listed in the contents. With distinguished provenance. Henderson p. 68; Goodspeed p. 163; Bruns B253; Wetzel p. 36 et seq
