1972. American Folk Blues Festival, Original Vintage Concert Poster, Deutschlandhalle, Berlin, Oct. 25 1972, Hamburg, March 14, 1972 produced by Lippmann & Rau, designed by Gunther Kieser with his imprint to lower right margin and photo credit to Hartmann. Huge A) Format, 46" by 39" (59.7 cm. by 84.5 cm.); the poster has never been folded and is in about fine condition, with pin holes to corners and centre of top and bottom margins, touch of creasing and wear to upper and lower left margin, else, bright, unmarked. This is the second of two AFBF tours mounted in its tenth anniversary season and the striking 'White Guitar' poster is one of two distinct designs that Kieser created for the German tour. The American Folk Blues Festival was the brainchild of German concert promoters, Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau, who had been successfully presenting jazz concerts in Germany since the mid - 1950’s. First held in 1962 and working with the well-connected Chicago bluesman, composer and bassist Willie Dixon, L&R had for the past decade presented a who’s who of American urban and country blues artists for the first time to European audiences with successful concerts in England, France and Germany. Early exposure to these great American blues musicians inspired and influenced a generation of British musicians, including future rock stars Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, all of whom played an important role in the blue-based British Invasion of the 1960’s. This was to be the last AFBF for eight years although the festival did resume in 1980 and continued for another five years. The posters created exclusively for the German AFBF festivals were designed by the eminent graphic designer Gunther Kieser and are representative of some of his finest music poster designs. The 'White Guitar' is a significant blues poster for the tenth presentation of the influential American Folk Blues Festival, in collector’s condition, uncommon in this format and scarce without factory folds. Description:
Hamburg: , 1960. Superb large-scale poster for the JATP tour of Germany in 1960, featuring Ella Fitzgerald, the Jimmy Giuffre Three, Paul Smith Quartet, Roy Eldridge, and the Shelly Manne Quintet. An example of the work of Kieser's early collaborative atelier with typographer Hans Michel (1952-62) which produced some truly remarkable work, graphically highly original, and imbued with a great sensitivity to the aesthetic of the artists being promoted. Here red, black and white typography in lower case sans serif is overlaid on a portrait of Ella in black on red to stunning effect. Produced solely for the German tour this is an uncommon poster, particularly so in the A0 format in such sharp condition. Offset lithographic on paper. Vintage outsize A0 format, sheet size: 112 x 82.6 cm. Light creases from old folds, some very slight cracking of the colour surface and one or two mild scuff, minute closed tear to the right-hand edge, but overall very good. Presented float mounted in a black museum box-style frame. Read More
