Very good copy of the best edition of Famin's catalogue of erotic art in the secret cabinet at Naples.With 60 hand-coloured plates engraved by A. Delvaux and protected by tissue guards.The plates show phallic sculptures and graffiti, Priapic bronze figures and gods, excited votive amulets, extraordinary winged phalli, as well as frescos depicting fauns and bacchantes, satyrs and nymphs, hermaphrodites, bed scenes with slaves in attendance, Apollo and a nymph, Venus and Cupid, and the famous acrobatic "rope dancers."When King Francis I of Naples visited the Pompeii exhibition at the Naples National Archaeological Museum with his wife and daughter in 1819, he was embarrassed by the erotic artwork and ordered it to be locked away in a "secret cabinet." For most of the 19th century, the specimens could only be viewed by gentlemen scholars by appointment. This collection of original material of Jerome Myers includes two photographs of Jerome Myers, taken by Leo Grubman, one taken in 1910 [when they shared an art gallery and studio] and signed by Leo Grubman, the other taken by Grubman circa 1932. There is a photograph of his wife Ethel (photographer not identified). After his success at the Armory Show in 1911 with the sale of his painting "The Mission Tent" he was able to move into a new studio at the new Carnegie Hall building. There are two warmly personal letters with biographical items of interest plus some artistic representation. The first letter is to his friend Leo Grubman, dated January 21, 1914, and discusses with pride his daughter Virginia's dance recital and his busy schedule. There is a second letter (lacking the first page) of one page signed "Jerome" and circa 1915 of his move to Carmel, New York where he bought 18 acres in a very rustic setting (where he has made a few nice ink sketches along the margins of the letter).
