Now, with television joined by more sophisticated electronic mediafrom the Internet to cell phones to DVDsit has taken on even greater significance. Amusing Ourselves to Death is a prophetic look at what happens when politics, journalism, education, and even religion become subject to the demands of entertainment. It is also a blueprint for regaining controlof our media, so that they can serve our highest goals.

Reviews

On Nov 25 2021, a reader said:
Neil Postman, in the first half of the book, does an excellent job of providing an overview of the theoretical aspects of communication and the various media used interact with and influence the content of what is communicated.

After this theoretical foundation, he traces with clarity and wit the changes in the nature and content of our discourse brought about by the telecommunication, culminating in the rise of television.

This is an excellent book that has quite accurately discussed , and predicted, the direction of our public discourse.
