About This Item
The First UK printing published by Faber and Faber Ltd, London in 1952. The BOOK is in near Fine condition in the publisher's original tan cloth, stamped in gilt on crimson panel at the spine. A hint of pushing at the spine tips and very light offsetting to the blank end-papers. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete with just a little creasing at the spine ends and light toning to the spine and edges. The wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. All nine of the author's black and white illustrations are present in the text. Evan Gill's personal copy with his bookplate to the front pastedown and his annotations to two newspaper cuttings tipped in to the rear pastedown and blank end paper. These cuttings refer to the the book winning the 'Russell Loines Memorial Fund Award' and the 'Times Literary Review' of November 1952 reviewing this title. Evan Gill was the brother of the artist Eric Gill with whom Jones had collaborated with early on in his career. David Jones began his long association with the Gill family in 1922, when he became an early pupil of Eric Gill and was briefly engaged to Gill's daughter, Petra, shortly afterwards. Jones will have known Evan through Eric and helped him with his bibliography of his brother's work. A wonderful association copy. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
