About This Item

London: The Soncino Press, 1930 2 volumes, 8vo (24 cm), XI, 420 pp; XI, 434 pp. Publisher's cloth, top edge gilt (slight foxing of edges and endpapers, bookplates of Frederick Arnold Brett). This is the first edition, copy number 211 out of 1000 printed. George Holbrook Jackson (1874-1948), a British journalist, writer, and publisher, was widely recognized as one of the leading bibliophiles of his time. "The Anatomy of Bibliomania," the most ambitious and important work in Holbrook Jackson's extensive bibliography, is composed in the style of the seventeenth-century prose master, Robert Burton, whose prototype "The Anatomy of Melancholy" inspired this project. This monumental work showcases an erudition in its field comparable to Burton, along with the same racy and witty style of the earlier work. However, Jackson, in his love for and knowledge of books, emerges as a distinct personality as he writes on every conceivable topic in the world of bibliomania, ranging from the most learned to the most frivolous.
