A variant edition of the first American edition bound in light tan boa rds with gold fan designs to the corners of the front board and gold t itle lettering on the spine. Decorated endpapers. The title page has a red decorated border. The title page's verso is blank. 186 pages plus a two page ad at the rear. A Very Good copy in a Good dust jacket. T he book's covers are clean and bright. Tiny tears to the spine tipsand a tiny chip to the base. Rubs to the corners. Contents are clean and unmarked. The dust jacket is green with black lettering and a portrait of Machen on the front panel. Chips to the jacket's corners and along the head and heel of its spine. Chipping along the panels' lower edge s. Rubs to the folds. The jacket's spine is faded. Soiling to the pane ls. This was Machen's first book and was originally published in 1884 under a pseudonym. This is the first American edition but is a variant binding and possibly a second printing with the copyright page being blank. .
