William Halsted, a pioneering surgeon whose introduced operations for cancer of the breast and for hernia, the use of cocaine injection for local anaesthetic, and rubber gloves, was the first professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins. He was also a cocaine addict and later a morphine addict. Published by Julian Messner in 1960.
