Frank's father was an angry, unemployed alcoholic, and the family lived in abject poverty, and was afflicted with frequent illness and death. Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography (1997) , National Book Critics' Circle Award (1996) , Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Biography (1996) , Exclusive Books Boeke Prize (1997)

McCourt is a master with words. His ability to tell such a sad story with humor and pure honesty is incredible. This is one of the most heartbreaking, unforgettable books I have ever read.
