Animal Portraiture with Fifty Studies in Full Colour Reproduced from the Original Paintings (of Wilhelm Kuhnert), by Lydekker, R. B.A. F.R.S. Published by Frederick Warne & Co. London and New York, Circa 1912. Folio up to 15" tall. viii, 105 pages. Plates are mounted on recessed card mat with tissue guard and accompanied by a few leaves of text by Lydekker specific to the animal portrait. Brown buckram cloth with black ruled borders; front board with tan buckram panel with black borders, gilt corners and vignette of a lion in brown and gilt titles. Spine titles in gilt with gilt vignette of an antelope; top edge gilt. Hinges are weakened although all pages still well attached. An occasional thumb mark and light toning to endpapers and outer edges of text and mats (not affecting plate proper); no tears, folds or markings. Light wear to boards.
Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865-1926) was a German painter, author and illustrator, who specialized in animal images; he is considered one of the most important German animal painters of his time.
