SIGNED, FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, FIRST ISSUE. New York, Frederick A Stokes Co., 1937. A Rare First Edition of the WINNER OF THE FIRST CALDECOTT AWARD for Best Illustrated Children's Book in 1938. First Issue with Lathrop's name misspelled "Lathop" on both the spine of the book and the spine of the dust jacket. This copy is Signed by Dorothy Lathrop on the blank page opposite the title page. The Book is in Very Good+ condition with mild toning and foxing on the endpapers and paste-downs, a dark spot on the first 4 pages. No writing or other marks. Gilt lettering on front board and spine Bright, no wear. Edges and corners show slight wear. Dust Jacket Very Good+ with small chips, light edge wear, and a red stain on the rear panel, the front is clean. Not price-clipped, "$2.00" on the top front dj flap. No medal or mention of Caldecott Award on the dust jacket. Helen Fish wrote the introduction and selected passages from the King James Bible to accompany the beautiful drawings of Dorothy Lathrop. This is a very nice copy of this highly collectible book.
Synopsis
Animals of the Bible is a book illustrated by Dorothy P. Lathrop with text compiled by Helen Dean Fish. Released by J. B. Lippincott Company, it was the first recipient of the Caldecott Medal for illustration in 1938.
