About This Item

A little soiling, very slight fraying at at head and heel and tanning of spine, but binding completely tight, all pages bright and clean, no marks, tears, foxing; on glossy paper. Some corners lightly bumped. Bears signature of former owner, K.M. Setton (1914-1995) of the Institute of Advanced Study. Some black and white plates. French, Arabic, English, German.

The "Hostage Edition" (Volume VII) of the yearbook of the prestigious Institut de Philologie et d'Histoire Orientales et Slaves of the Université libre de Bruxelles (1834-1969). Published in exile in New York because of the Nazi occupation, and dedicated to "The memory of the orientalists and slavicists victims of the invasion and persecution of the barbarians." Includes a martyrology of scholars lost to the Nazis.

Includes articles on Heliodorus, medieval wall paintings in Cyprus, conversion of the Slavs, Slavic and Medieval liturgy, a hitherto untranslated Arabic account of the conquest of Cyprus, and much more.

With a rather touching preface expressing gratitude to the colleagues who have made publication possible, and expressing sorrow for the losses at the hands of the Nazis by Henri Grégoire (1881-1964), the founder of Byzantine studies in Belgium, and Robert Werner (1895-1959) the eminent businessman, philanthropist and founder of the Institut.
