London: The Franfrolico Press, 1928. Hardcover. Orig. three quarter black morocco and navy cloth, backstrip and cover lettered in gilt. Very good. Lindsay, Norman. 63 pages. Folio, 39.5 x 30 cm. Limited edition, copy, one of 550 printed on Arnold's handmade paper for Lionel Ellis, and signed "from P.J. Stephensen" in ink. Ellis was painter, wood engraver, modeller and teacher, and his liking for the Old Masters of painting influenced his illustrations, in the 1920s, of Robert Herrick, Theocritus and Catullus for the Fanfrolico Press. Laid-in, the publisher's prospectus. Nietzsche hated Germans as much as he despised Christian theology, and coined the phrase "Blonde Beasts." The six plates by Lindsay reproduced in copper-gravure. Type is in Poliphilus capitals. "The influence of the Nonesuch Press was considerable in Franfrolico's deliberate adoption of the mode of the sixteenth-century scholar-printers." [CAVE, RODERICK: THE PRIVATE PRESS p.293]. Clean interior, slight extremity rubbing.

Illustrated by Austen, 15 plates of which 5 are colored. Nepenthe, the Italian island is the fictional setting of South Wind, or Capri in light disguise. Norman was perhaps more well known for his scatological limericks rather than his Mediterranean travel works. v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
