York: Thomas Gent, Sold at the Printing Office Near the Star in Stonegate, 1733. Book. Very Good. Hardback. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A very good and attractive copy of this elusive volume and one with a fascinating association. Bound in full green leather with gilt decoration and initials in gilt "E.C.M." to front board. Marbled endpapers and attractive 18th century bookplate of Henry Maister of Kingston upon Hull, the Maister family were prominent in Hull, Henry Maister (1699 1744), was a British merchant and Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1734 to 1741 and was instrumental in the construction of the Maister House in the city. Around the period of this book, 13 April 1743 a fire destroyed the family house in High Street, Hull and his wife Mary and her infant son died; neatly written facing "Eurretta Charlotte Maister", these being the initials ECM to front board. There are two distinct page numbering, one for The History of Ripon, 166pp + 73pp + 6pp advertisement and 2pp list of subscribers. This copy is complete with all plates and engravings as called for, including the fold-out frontispiece or Ripon. See (Boyne CXCII. A fascinating association copy with an interesting provenance.
