About This Item
Paris: Gumuchian & Cie, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 vols., Large Quarto. Vol. I: 446 pp. describing 6,251 entries, with full bibliographical details for each item; Vol. II: 336 plates, some in color and hightened in gold, of title pages, illustrations, bindings, and texts, plus an "Index des Planches." Prefaces in each volume by Paul Gavault. Contemporary half-red morocco over red linen by Kelly and Sons, London, for Sotheran. Lovely copy of the standard reference work on children's books, not only French but English, German, and Italian; it is justly considered to be one of the greatest -- if not THE greatest -- bookseller's catalogues of children's books ever producted. Our copy is one of the 900 copies on "papier velin" of a total edition of 1000. * As is stated in the introduction: "This catalogue represents an attempt, the first of its kind, to present to booklovers a collection of early juvenile literature." * The 1979 reprint is absolutely ghastly compared to this first edition which is distinguished by the greatly superior quality of the plates and paper stock. Rare in collectible condition, as here.
