Reprint from the 1880s of ukiyo-e artist Masanobu Okumura's depiction of nightlife in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters in the Edo era.Masanobu Okumura (1686-1764) was a Japanese print designer, book publisher, illustrator and painter.This orihon concertina-style book includes 38 double-page illustrations of geisha with their maids and samurai customers, playing board games and cards, smoking tobacco pipes, playing shamisen, reading books, etc. One plate shows the artist Okumura painting a large screen. 38 woodblock prints printed in three colors on 76 pages bound in orihon concertina-style with decorative washi paper over boards.Condition: binding repaired with washi paper, interior bright and fresh with no spotting.

Incomplete copy of a popular book on the Regency spa town of Scarborough.18 (of 21) handcoloured aquatint plates etched by Thomas Rowlandson after original sketches by J. Green. (Plates aquatinted by J. Stadler and J. Bluck.)Missing the title page and frontispiece Widow Ducker, pages I-XV, and the plates The Breakfast Room and The Shower Bath. The surviving 18 plates show life at a fashionable resort town, with scenes of people drinking the healing waters at the Spa Wells, swimming in the sea, dancing at the Ball Room, promenading on the Terrace, shopping at the Shoe Shop, borrowing books at the circulating Library, etc. The naked woman bathing in The Warm Bath is said to be the poet Mary Robinson, George IV's mistress, The poems are by Rowlandson's frequent collaborator William Combe, John Buonarotti Papworth and Francis Wrangham.Condition: Half red morocco, spine with five raised bands, gilt decoration, red buckram boards. Full page coloured lithographs by Rojan and text by Y.Lacote. A very good copy of the first edition with the loosely inserted fold-out calendar which is often missing. Overall size c.170 x 185 mm. Scarce thus.

Eyre and Spottiswoode, London.,1930. LIMITED EDITION. Tall 4to. (13.7 x 8.7 inches). 450 copies published, 250 for the British Empire and 200 for USA. This is number 217 and is signed by Frank Adams. Illustrated throughout with Colour Portrait frontis, within a mono border and 13 lithograph illustrations decorating the chapter headings, 9 of these printed in colour. There are also 10 small wood engraved tail pieces, all uncoloured. On the front pastedown endpaper is a printed label from the publisher, giving details of the book, stating the name of the recipient of this particular copy and listing the copy number, both written in in ink. Original vellum backed, marbled paper covered boards.The spine lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Overall a very good, bright example of this well produced edition.:

Fore-edge and the first few pages affected by some very light foxing, otherwise a very good copy of this attractive edition. Publishers orange cloth with black lettering to the spine and front board. Small gilt stamped school badge to the front board. School prize label, dated 1942, on the front free endpaper. In the scarce original colour illustrated dustwrapper. A couple of small chips to the edge of the wrapper and the spine a bit toned but overall in very good condition.
