London: Jonathan Cape, 1932. AP3 - A first edition (First published 1932 stated) hardcover book in very good condition in good dust jacket that is mylar protected. Dust jacket has corners of the inside flaps clipped except for the price, wrinkling, chipping, crease, some tears and one open tear on the edges and corners, darkened spine, some scatttered stains and smudge, tanning, and shelf wear. Book has some bumped corners, tiny tear on the bottom right corner of the spine, foxing and some stains on the page edges, previous owner's label adhered on the front fixed endpaper, light tanning and shelf wear. Includes a laid in publisher's promotional Book Mark for NOW AND THEN. Although not marked in any way, this copy comes from the personal collection of Otto Penzler, legendary editor and founder of the Mysterious Press, an award-winning icon in the genre. 8"x5.25", 314 pages. H.A.(Harold Alfred) Manhood was a British author, particularly of short stories who for much of his life lived in a converted railway carriage in the Sussex countryside growing his own food and brewing his own cider. Harold Manhood was born in 1904 to Henry Alfred Manhood (born 1872 Bromley-by-Bow, London a railway worker and house carpenter) and his mother Alice Norris. Many of Manhood's stories had a rural setting, and would often touch upon the weird and supernatural. His short story collections include Nightseed and other Tales (1928), Apples by Night (1932) and Fierce and Gentle (1935). His novel Gay Agony was published in 1930. Manhood contributed 97 tales to the Evening News between 1934 and 1964. Other short stories appeared in Argosy, Lilliput, The Star and John O'London's Weekly.. First Edition. Hardcover. Spine ends bumped, leaf edges age toned and lightly foxed. In the color illustrated dust jacket. Jacket edges rubbed, short closed tears, spine and top edge sunned, but with front flap price 7s 6d intact. Sixteen short stories from the Sussex author. In a distinctive clock motif dust jacket, designer uncredited, drawing heavily on a Bauhaus influence. Dust jacket now preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.
