About This Item

London, New York, and Bombay: Longmans, Green, and Co, 1898. FIRST EDITION / FIRST PRINTING, of Andrew Lang's translation.. Bound in a period (circa 1900) morocco leather binding, by the prestigious Riviere and Son Bindery. Gilded spine with intricate floral embossing. Raised hubs. All edges cased in gilding. Riviere bound the original pictorial cloth binding into this book as the pastedowns. The original cloth cover depicts a soaring devil over an Arabian skyline, reincarnated and preserved as the front pastedown. Illustrated with 33 full page plates and 33 textual illustrations. Printed on quality paper. 424 pages. 7.25 inches tall. In very good condition overall, but with some wear to the binding. Near fine internally. The paper is fresh, bright, and clean. Near free of any trace of foxing. No previous owner's names. The binding shows some general wear and abrasion. the hinges, although strongly attached, show slight starting to the outer surface, from abrasion, but are nonetheless very sound and intact. This is an excellent copy, bound by Riviere, and with the original cloth binding preserved within. Translated from the French version of Mr. Galland. This book also includes examples of some of the best of Victorian wood engraved book illustration by H. J. Ford. Lang also edited The Fairy Books (Blue, Red etc.) and the Blue Poetry Book etc. All books are professionally wrapped, to help ensure safe handling during transit. We regularly ship internationally.
