About This Item

London: B.T. Batsford, 1933. Hardcover. Very Good. Oversize. Signed. An exquisitely produced set celebrating the achievements of a firm on the forefront of early and mid-20th century architectural expression. Two Volumes; 1933; 42 cm x 30 cm elephant folios in heavy board slipcases. Privately Published for Graham, Anderson, Probst & White by B.T. Batsford in a limited edition of 300. This copy, number 34, is presented with the compliments of firm founder Ernest R. Graham to prominent Chicago lawyer John P. Wilson of the firm Wilson & McIlvaine, with Graham's signature on the limitation page. Bound by London bindery Sangorski & Sutcliffe in full crushed Morocco with gilt ruled borders over front and back-sides of boards; gilt titling between and decoration over five raised bands on spine; signed by S&S on turn-in over bottom edge of front board; top edge of page block in gilt as well. Images of the firm's works are illustrated in 386 gorgeous photogravure plates, divided between Volume One (museums, auditoriums, railway terminals, public and college buildings, libraries, department stores, hotels, electric and steam plants, wholesale warehouses, etc.) and Volume Two (bank and office buildings); photogravure plates engraved and printed by hand at A. Alexander & Sons, Ltd. All letterpress, including a foreword by E.R. Graham, composed in Baskerville type and printed at The Westminster Press on English handmade rag paper. The two books are in near fine condition, showing only some sunning and minor rubbing to the spine of Vol. 2; minor rubbing to the gilt decoration on the outer edges of the boards; two very faint, small surface scratches in Vol. 2's gilt top edge; and some light sunning to edges of the marbled end pages. The slipcases show a moderate amount of sunning around edges, some surface scratching and abrasions to paper over the boards. Due to the size/weight of this set extra charges to apply for expedited or international shipping. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
