Eastwood/Woodstock, ON, ca. 1847-1857. Very good +. 80 letters, receipts and documents relating to William Scott, a merchant of Eastwood, Ontario, just east of Woodstock in Oxford County. Documents placed under see-through plastic in black folder.
The majority of the documents are receipts dated 1856-57 and relate to a range of Woodstock merchants. These documents with letterhead include: Dr. J. A. Hamilton, importer and dealer in dry goods, groceries, earthenware, etc.; James Knight and Company, dry goods, groceries, hardware, china and glassware, paints, oils, wines, spirits, etc.; Gunn and Mackay, hardware, groceries, crockery, liquors, paints, oils, dye stuffs, window glass, putty, etc.; M. W. Pruyn of Brantford, wholesale and retail grocer; William Warwick, wholesale and retail bookseller and general stationer; James and Angus Clark, groceries, crockery, glassware, wines, liquors, etc. Also included are two letters and partial response from Scott to the Education Office in Montreal, written while Scott was working as a teacher in Dundee, Canada East, in 1847. These letters concern appointments to teaching positions in the townships. Included are receipts from the Great Western Railway (1857) and bailiff letters.
