Philadelphia: Childs & Peterson, 1856. Two vols. Thick 8vo. 464; 467, [1] pp. Steel-engraved frontisp. to both vols, steel-engraved titles, 2 large folding maps, map, 300 text woodcuts & engravings. Dark brown embossed & decorated cloth, embossed illustration of ship trapped in the ice (minor chipping & wear to head & foot of spine, minor wear & rubbing to corners, slight bumping, front inner hinges starting), still G- set, w/ clean text & plates. First edition of this famed account of the second Grinnell Expedition to search for the lost Franklin and make scientific observations north of Smith Sound Greenland. The extensive data on the vegetation, wildlife, Eskimos, and the ice are excellent, as well as the rousing account of his abandoning of the ship Advance, and returning on an epic trek to Upernivik.
