About This Item

New York: William R, Scott, Inc., 1968. Originally published in 1861. This edition 1968. Hardback. xiii, 144pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Daniel Weston Hall was fifteen years old when he joined the crew of the whaling ship, 'Condor', and sailed from New Bedford harbour in 1856. Daniel's whaling adventure lasted longer than he anticipated, for due to the cruelty of the captain, he deserted the 'Condor' and spent the winter in Siberia. He was finally picked up by another American ship the follwing spring, and in another year made his way back to New Bedford in time for his nineteenth birthday. Daniel kept a journal of his adventures and in 1861 his story was published. Designer William Hogarth, while remaining faithful to the style of books published in the late nineteenth century, has enriched Daniel's account with a sail plan, a map, a whale chart, and accurate drawiings of the whaling process aboard a whaling ship. The result is an attractive and exciting book for anyone interested in stories of whaling and the sea. Book in very good condition. Dust jacket fair. Price clipped. Generally rubbed and soiled. Edge wear and chipping, some closed tears and nicks. Rear flap separated but repaired with tape to rear surface. Jacket now in a protective sleeve.
