About This Item

London: William Kimber, 1975. First British Edition. This book is a detailed account of a vital naval battle - a record of epic courage and remains a proud chapter in Maritime history of the Royal Navy. Three convoy battles which stand above all others during World War II. All took place within the short space of three months. All are identified by the code names or numbers. Two of them involved convoys to Russia, 'PQ17' was a ghastly defeat, 'Pedestal' a costly victory - and PQ18? The reader will judge. In September of 1942 the ships of PQ18 put to sea in proud defiance of the grim fate of PQ17. The hard-fought action that followed is described in this detailed and careful study of one of the major convoy battles of WW II. A generous list of illustrations provided - many of them photographs on heavier semi-gloss stock. Author's note precedes chapter one. Seven informative chapters, six appendices, sources and index supplied. The appendices.... (1) Composition of Convoy PQ18.... (2) Composition of the Naval Escort Forces.... (3) RAF Units and Luftwaffe Units.... (4) R/T Call Signs.... (5) Summary of Fleet Air Arm Sorties.... (6) German Naval Units. Illustration in the text will show: Layout of Merchant Ships in Convoy PQ18.... Route of Convoy and initial U-boat dispositions.... Screening Plan for Full Strength Escort.... Submarine Patrols and the route of German Forces.... RAF Patrol Zones and Torpedo Strikes. Light bruising to two corners of boards. Remainder mark to bottom edge near spine. Photo illustrated dust jacket reproduced by permission of the Imperial War Museum. This copy remains bright, clean and respectable.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good.
