Description:
Circa [1940s]., [1940s].. Very good. - A slip of cream-colored paper, 2-5/8 inches high by 7 inches wide, is inscribed and signed in black ink: "With all good wishes / John Howard Lawson". There is light offsetting to the right side of the paper where a small piece of tape adheres to the verso. There are 2 very light vertical creases where the paper was once folded. Very good. John Howard Lawson [1894-1977] was an American writer who for several years was head of the Hollywood division of the Communist Party USA. He was also the organization's cultural manager and answered directly to V. J. Jerome, the party's New York-based cultural chief. He was the first president of the Writers Guild of America, West after the Screen Writers Guild split into two regional organizations. During the McCarthy era in the 1950s, Lawson was one of the Hollywood Ten, the first group of American film industry professionals to be blacklisted.

Boston: Little Brown, 1936. First Edition. Signed presentation copy from the author Broadway producer and director Shepard Traube to playwright, novelist, and screenwriter Michael Blankfort. Inscribed: “To Michael & Laury. In case Peter or Susan want to into the theatre. Shepard”. Beneath the inscription mutual friend, Albert Maltz, has signed the book and jokingly written “Men’s Dormitory”. Daughter Susan Blankfort has also signed the book. Maltz and Blankfort met and became friends with Traube in the 1930s when they were both young playwrights with plays on Broadway. Albert Maltz eventually became a successful Hollywood screenwriter who became one of The Hollywood Ten those film industry individuals who refused to name names before the House Committee on Un-American activities. Blacklisted by the film industry from working, Maltz was out of work. Michael Blankfort stepped forward and acted as a front for Maltz, putting his name on Maltz’s screenplay for the film, Broken Arrow, in 1950.… Read More
