In this 1819 paper Irving Langmuir (1881-1957) proposed a set of eleven postulates describing the arrangement of electrons in shells and layers, and used the postulates to derive the properties of the chemical elements. In the same paper he also coined the term "covalence." Langmuir was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for "for his discoveries and investigations in surface chemistry.". [4], [113]-120, [855]-1030 pp. [4 pp. ads]. 8vo. Green paper covers with slight darkening at edges of front and rear covers from age, 1/2" loss at head of spine. Clean within.
