Description:
NY: Greystone Press. VG in G DJ. (1968). Revised ed. In western China, on the great silk road, lies the ancient city of Tun-Huang, famous for its great Buddhist shrine with 469 . caves carved out of a sandy cliff. Founded in the 4th century A.D., its wealth of wall paintings and other valuable works of art was produced during successive dynasties right up to the 19th century when it first came to the notice of the Western world. Few persons outside China have seen this extraordinary body of paintings, but author de Silva had the good fortune to do so and take photos of them in color. They show Tun-Huang was no mere provincial site but served as intermediary for Western influences and also gave expression for the main stream of the Chinese art tradition. Blank book plate front endpaper, DJ separating from plastic film at top corner, some spotting on top fore-edge. .
