New York: Guggenheim Museum / Harry N. Abrams, 1998. 1998 First Edition, with exhibit ephemera included (read on). NEAR FINE in NEAR FINE dust jacket (the scarce variant jacket with a photo of the 1965 49 cc Kreidler Florett on front; a detail photo of the Triumph X75 Hurricane on the rear.) Selling with the book are the following ephemeral items: an admission ticket to the Guggenheim Museum's exhibition (for which this book was published), ticket dated Sunday, July 26 (1998); two copies of the Museum Guide booklet for Summer 1998 (for which this motorcycle exhibit is the cover story); two copies of 4-page leaflet, printed on card stock, titled "Family Activity Guide: The Art of the Motorcycle." This is a clean, totally unmarked and firmly bound copy. Pages and silver endpapers are fresh and clean; faint toning along top page margins, otherwise fine. The dove gray silken cloth hardcover, titled in silver on front and spine is fresh and clean, three tiny shelf bumps to board edges, otherwise fine. Binding and hinges are firm, intact and straight. Colorful dust jacket is complete, clean and bright. Slight shelf rub and a few light surface scratches to rear panel; no tears, creases or chips. The jacket is in a clear archival protector. The extraordinary 1998 exhibit included over 100 motorcycles chosen for their historic importance and design excellence. The display was designed by Frank Gehry and ran from June 26 to September 20 in New York City (later in Chicago and the Guggenheim in Bilbao). The book is a beautifully designed, sumptuously illustrated history of the motorcycle and its culture. A detailed description of each selected bike is provided. There are 16 essays by 15 contributors, including Hunter S. Thompson (Song of the Sausage Creature) and Dennis Hopper (Bikes Were Always Work for Me). A Bibliography by and other reference source information are included. A ground-breaking classic, now scarce in the original edition. 10 x 12-1/4"; 432 pages. A heavy volume (7 lbs) that will require additional postage for overseas or priority mailing.. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine.
