About This Item

In: Historia (Paris, 1955-  ) no. 242 (January 1967), pages 120-31     ¶ ONLY EDITION: This is the original magazine whose cover inspired the American artist Jim Dine to embark on his extraordinary series of nine Rimbaud portraits 1971-73, now very scarce and highly prized. In an interview with Thomas Krens (1976), Dine recalled that he had been "impressed by Rimbaud first as a still life. The Rimbaud series began several years ago when I found a French popular history magazine in a bookstall on the quai in Paris. The cover of the magazine had a portrait of Rimbaud, probably by some nineteenth-century academician [but in fact after Carjat 1871/2], and I was attracted by the way the face looked, physically. Seeing his face in a bookstall on the Seine--it just struck me how interested I was, how much he looked like a young boy, how amazing his face was. I then read his poems, and about his life, and that really fascinated me, but it was his face that I was attracted to." (Williams/Devereux 1977, 23.)  Scarce.   ||| Cover title: Rimbaud, le révolté.  Collation: 239 x 157 mm: 80 leaves, paginated 1-160.  Illustration: Numerous halftone illustrations and facsimiles (including nine relating to Rimbaud).  Binding: Color pictorial wrappers, priced 2 F.  Condition: Very good.  References: LCCN 49051785; OCLC 01586868. About Jay Dillon Rare Books + Manuscripts

Jay Dillon Rare Books + Manuscripts is a private, research-intensive rare-book dealer of forty years' experience in and around New York, specialized in exceptional books, manuscripts, and cultural property. Jay Dillon has been responsible for selling or appraising more than $100 million worth of books and manuscripts spanning some three thousand years. In 1989 Jay Dillon was the editor and principal author of a richly annotated catalogue that was hailed in the English press as one of the ten best books -- of any kind -- published that year. In 1994 he was invited to narrate the Discovery Channel program on the history of monopoly; and four years later he was consulted by the Zapruder family in connection with their famous film of the assassination of President Kennedy -- which, as it turned out, Mr Dillon valued more accurately than any other appraiser. The firm maintains a wide and productive network of relationships both among private collectors and in the trade; and we are currently engaged in building a number of outstanding private collections for our clients. Books and manuscripts offered to the public are mainly duplicates from our clients' libraries, or otherwise surplus to their needs. Our appraisal services include formal appraisals for insurance, estate-settlement, and tax purposes. For details please contact Dillonbook@AOL.com.
