Gray paper boards, maroon cloth spines with black title blocks. Volume 1: 146 pages, 3 color and 4 bw plates. Volume 2 :unpaginated and contains 245 bw plates on pp. Photo is of a previous copy from our collection. Dense spotted foxing to volume one's pastedown and endpaper. Volume one has instances of pencil underlining to opening twenty pages. Both volumes have instances of speckled or spotted foxing. Remains a nice set. The complete two-volume set of essays and supporting illustrations as assembled by American art critic and collector Duncan Phillips (1886-1966). Volume 1 consists of 11 essays, exhibition notes, and colums on specific artists.. Many of these are on European art-related topics, but those of direct American interest would include writings on Karl Knaths, John Marin, Augustus Vincent Tack, Harold Weston, and American Old Masters. Volume 2 contains 245 bw plates, with an artist index at the front that reflects the strong American representation in this collection. The set constitutes No. 6 in the Phillips Publications series.
