Embossed library stamp on a few pages, bookplate on front pastedown; otherwise unmarked. Provenance: From the collection of Burton scholar and bibliographer James Casada. Written a few years after Burton's celebrated account of his journey to Mecca and Medina, this book describes the explorer's 1860 visit to Salt Lake City. Burton, who met Brigham Young on the trip, applied his characteristic ethnographic eye to Mormon ways, and his work offers a detailed and sympathetic portrait. Unmarked except for early previous owner's inscription (see photo). Virually no foxing at all. First tissue guard is torn at bottom but others are intact. Biographical and historical narratives with many full-page engravings. 9" x 11". Some scuffing to leather and light wear to extremities, and light chipping to top of spine of volume 2. A very good plus copy of this beautifully produced work.

Large foldout linen backed map of "Oregon Territory" to front of book. Repair to approximately six-inch tear near top right fold line of map. Some foxing to map. Edges are chipped, ink stain upper outer edge not affecting text, pages are toned, corners bumped. Author put together this pamphlet to encourage the public to encourage the Union Navy to consider his designs for a warship. Scarce. None listed for sale; none found at auction. Clarksburg, VA: Joseph Israel, 1831. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Alexander Scott Withers (1792 - 1865) was a lawyer, Virginia slave owner, magistrate, and teacher. This book describes events spanning from the French and Indian War (1754) through the Battle of Fallen Timbers (1794). Withers prided himself on researching this book, which included reading historical source material and personally interviewing several pioneers. It includes many graphic accounts of massacres. Withers fathered several children with one of his mulatto slaves - and later sold both the slave and his own children, which spurred an article in Harper's Weekly on the question of white slaves. During his teaching career, Withers taught future General "Stonewall Jackson" for at least one year (Wikipedia). Bound in full dark brown leather with gilt title label to spine.
