Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1903. Limited Edition, one of 150 copies on paper. Vellum Binding. pp. 48. Half-sheet octavo. Printed in black Subiaco type with a single red initial on the opening page. One full page woodcut and several in-text woodcuts scattered throughout, all taken from the Wynkyn de Worde edition of 1496. Internally, this is a nearly fine copy. Bound as issued in limp vellum with typical toning; spine stamped in gold; all housed in recent custom-made clamshell. Inscribed and initialed by Sydney Cockerell, noted bibliophile and secretary of the Kelmscott Press. Cockerell was instrumental in Hornby's decision to have the Subiaco typeface made for the Ashendene Press, the first of two proprietary typefaces that Hornby had designed for the Press. Cockerell inscribes this to "Katie." It is quite likely that this is the bookbinder, Katharine Adams. She and Cockerell traveled in the same circles (she was friends with William Morris's daughters from childhood) and became and remained very close friends throughout their lives. She studied bookbinding with Sarah Prideaux and T. J. Cobden-Sanderson and quickly made her mark in the field. Among the most accomplished designers and bookbinders, she did commission binding not only for Cockerell, Hornby, and Emory Walker, but many others including Queen Mary and George V. A wonderful association copy. Hornby XVI; Ransom 17; Meynell, Best of Friends: Further Letters to SCC; DAB, Adams; DAB Cockerell. Inscribed by Sydney Cockerell.
