The author, a seismologist and geophysicist, uses scientific and archaeological evidence to demonstrate that Atlantis could not have existed in the Atlantic, and that in all likelyhood it is a mythologised version of a Minoan civilization in the Aegean, that was wiped out by a catastrophic volcanic explosion.
