In publisher's embossed cloth with title on the spine. Some conservation work on the book as it appears to be recased with new endpapers, probably within the last decade or so; it is a solid copy, though it has a pronounced forward lean; corners frayed, some closed tears to the cloth at the top and bottom of both joints; early ownership name on the first blank; contents are generally and at times heavily foxed and age-toned/stained. A response to Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, Eastman, like many other before and after, offers a idealized caricature of life as a slave including all the typical justifications--economic, religious, and moral. "Although hastily composed," Elizabeth Toller writes in her American National Biography entry, "and loosely structured, it was the most popular of the many anti--Uncle Tom novels written in the early 1850s, selling approximately 18,000 copies in a few weeks" (ANB). A solid copy of an uncommonly early printing of this novel.
