Auburn, [N.Y.]: J.G. Hathaway; Kellogg & Beardslee Printers, Manlius, 1815. Two volumes. 12mo. [Leaves approx. 16.5 x 10 cm.] 228, 94, [2] pages and 264, 129, [1-blank], [2] pages. The final leaf in each volume consists of an index and errata. Original full calf. Vol. I rebacked in modern leather with gilt leather title and volume-number labels and blind fillets on the spine. Vol. II with original leather title label, gilt fillets, and small gilt decorations on the spine, but with new leather volume number label and with the endcaps professionally rebuilt. Spine of vol. II worn, all corners worn, a few superficial cracks and scratches to boards. Upper 1.5 cm of the title page of vol. I torn away and missing, with loss of the initial article ("An") of the title. Marginal chipping to the leaf comprising pp. 13-14 in vol. I, affecting a few letters in three to four words on each page, all of which are easily inferred from context. Text is otherwise very good, with light foxing and toning as expected and a little damping to the first few leaves of vol. I. Provenance: Ownership inscription of Henry Shriver, Jun., of Bath, dated May 1816 at the head of the title page and on the rear free endpaper in vol. II and a remnant of his inscription, dated April 29, 1816, on the title page of vol. I. Somewhat later name of Edward Townsend on the front free endpaper and the first page of the text in each volume. Early edition, being the FIRST AUBURN EDITION, the first with this title, and, according to Howes, "the best edition." Preceded by several editions of 1814-1815, which were issued under two variant titles: "Views on Lake Erie . . . " and "Views of the Campaigns of the Northwestern Army . . ." Samuel R. Brown (1775-1817) served as a private in the Ohio militia. He "partook of the pursuit of British forces following the battle of Lake Erie . . . Brown fought at the Thames, but felt sympathy for the Native Americans. . . . Includes topographical observations." --Fredriksen, "War of 1812 Eyewitness Accounts," 236. "Strongly pro-American, anti-British, narration of the War of 1812. Appendix includes treaties with Britain and with the Indians and assorted other documents." --Smith, "The War of 1812: An Annotated Bibliography," 38. Complete sets are scarce and the first volume is more commonly found by itself than the second. Howes (2nd ed.) B866. Sabin 8556. AI 34233.

Description:
Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
