Fukuzawa Yukichi (1835-1901) was a Japanese author, writer, teacher, translator, entrepreneur, journalist, and leader. He was probably the most-influential man outside government service in the Japan of the Meiji Restoration (1868). He also founded Keio University, Jiji-Shinpo and the Institute for Study of Infectious Diseases.
