Postmarked 1837. 3 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, tears at centre fold and at seal opening, address panel. Sir John William Kaye (1814-1876), military historian, author of The History of the War in Afghanistan (London, 1851), succeeded John Stuart Mill as secretary of the political and secret department of the India Office. He is referring in this letter to an early work, Doveton; or, The man of many impulses, by the author of 'Jerningham' [3 vols., 1837].
