First edition. Hardcover. RUTHERFORD ON RADIUM. Important letter from Rutherford to Charles Herman Viol requesting information about the production of radium, in preparation for a series of lectures he was to deliver at The Royal Institution. "From 1921, when he succeeded [J. J.] Thomson, until his death, Rutherford was professor of natural philosophy at the Royal Institution in London, a post that entailed several lectures each year" (DSB). Rutherford (1871-1937) had moved in 1919 from Manchester to Cambridge, where he was director of the Cavendish Laboratory. There he continued his research on radioactivity, mainly in collaboration with James Chadwick, work which depended on a steady supply of radioactive materials. Since 1913 Viol had been director of research at the US Standard Chemical Company, the first successful large-scale producer of radium, and editor of its in-house journal Radium. Rutherford (1871-1937), the "father of nuclear physics," writes to Danish physicist Martin Knudsen regarding the lectures on atomic theory he plans to give in Copenhagen, and ends with a reference to Niels Bohr. In part: "I would be prepared to begin my three lectures either on Saturday or on Monday Sept 20 as you prefer. I trust these times will meet with your approval. The titles of my 3 lectures will be 1 Counting of atoms 2 Structure of atoms 3 Isotopes and their meaning The first will be the most popular but I am hopeful I can make all three intelligbile if my audience can follow English. I am writing to Bohr also" Knudsen (1871-1949) was a molecular physicist at the Technical University in Denmark. "It was important to Bohr that Rutherford should be one of the very first to see his new Institute for Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University, and Rutherford's first visit to Denmark in September 1920 was timed with this in mind. However, the opening of the institute was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Bohr did make us of the occasion of Rutherford's visit to introduce his mentor to the Danish pulblic in a substantial popular article in a Copenhagen newspaper" (Collected Works of Bohr, vol 12, p 109).
