Cahirmoyle [co. Limerick], 1 December 1846. 1½ pages 7 x 4½ inches, tipped on to a small Victorian album leaf headed ‘William Smith O’Brien’. William Smith O’Brien (1803–1864), Irish nationalist politician. He joined with Daniel O’Connell in the movement for the repeal of legislative union between Great Britain and Ireland (1843), took part in the insurrection in the south of Ireland (1848). His death sentence was commuted to transportation (to Tasmania). O’Brien was instrumental in founding the Irish Confederation, the first meeting of which took place on 13 January 1847. Towards the end of 1846 O’Brien published ‘Reproductive Employment; or a Series of Letters to the Landed Proprietors of Ireland, with a preliminary letter ot Lord John Russell’.
