Pale green cloth boards with decorative black and lavender stamps and gilt title front and spine. Frontispiece of Fitzgerald. Decorative frame around each page's text. Gilt top page edges. Fraying of ends of spine corners and board's lower corners. Front endpaper has a fixed newspaper square regarding the pronunciation of the title which has acid-burned a square onto the adjacent flyleaf.

London, 1849. Very good overall. Letter written by FitzGerald in his position as assistant secretary of the British Museum, thanking the Academy of Natural Science of Philadelphia for supplying them with a copy of their proceedings from July to October 1848. FitzGerald was a proponent of emigration to alleviate poverty, spurred by the tragedy of the Irish Potato Famine. In 1849, he became the secretary of the Canterbury Association of Christchurch New Zealand, and emigrated there with his wife in 1850. He became the first superintendent, and progressed to a prominent role in politics in New Zealand. He was also the founder and editor of the newspaper "The Press". 1 leaf, 9 3/4 x 15 3/4, folded, stamp less cover addressed to the Academy of Natural Science in Philadelphia, with a seal, and three postal cancellations, as well as "Paid" hand written. Period folds, 2" closed tear repaired archivally.
