Renishaw Hall, Renishaw near Suffield, 1941. One and one-half pages, on recto and verso of. quarto lettersheet, in ink. Folded to quarters, otherwise very good or better. To "Dear Miss [Linda] Melton," her contact at her publishers, Faber and Faber, and for a time, secretary to T. S. Eliot. Sitwell writes in "thanks for your kindness in sending those press cuttings to Mr. [Philip] Frere, and for communicating with him so quickly, and thank you so much, too, for your good wishes about the case. They've behaved abominably, I may say at this point." Philip Frere was Osbert Sitwell's solicitor, and one of the parties privy to the financial and family difficulties haunting the Sitwells during the 1940s and 50s. She further requests that "12 copies of 'Poems New and Old' be sent to me ... (I am needing them urgently, and I should be so grateful, too, if you would be kind enough to tell me how they are selling ...." POEMS NEW AND OLD appeared under the Faber imprint in October of the previous year.

1792. Very Good. Handwritten letter, dated Jan. 28, 1792, to James McCubbin Lingan, Collector at Georgetown, Md., acknowledging the receipt of a paid draft of the Treasurer for $400. Signed by Tench Coxe (1755-1824), who had been appointed Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in 1789 when Alexander Hamilton was Secretary of the Treasury. Coxe served in the Continental Congnress and was the author of numerous political pieces. James McCubbin Lingan (1751-1812) served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution and was appointed Collector of the Port of Georgetown by George Washington after the war. He was murdered by a mob while defending the freedom of the press during the War of 1812. In Very Good Condition: several old folds; starting to separate along one fold; otherwise, clean and solid.

Nixon was sending forms to Bryan F. LaPlante, Chief, Washington Area Security Operations, Atomic Energy Commission, to obtain a "Q" clearance for Christian A. Herter, Jr., who was to join Nixon's staff. Bears stamp of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission in lower corner. Christian A. Herter, Jr. (1919-2007), had served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives until his father, Christian A. Herter, Sr., was elected governor in 1953. Later that year he became an aide to Vice President Richard Nixon, travelling to Asia with him. In the 1960s he joined Mobil Oil, becoming Vice President in 1967. In 1970, then President Nixon appointed him deputy assistant secretary of state for environmental and population affairs. In Near Fine Condition: lightly creased; one small spot near left-hand edge; otherwise, clean and solid.

1808. Very Good. 1 handwritten letter from the Duke of Montrose, dated 3 May 1808, London, responding to a request from Lt. Col. Simpson for scheduling the Eastern Battalion of Stirlingshire Volunteer Infantry for two weeks at Stirling. James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose (1755-1836), was a member of Parliament in 1780 and from 1784 to 1790 and is said to be responsible for the repeal of the act prohibiting the wearing of tartans in 1782. He was Master of the Horse from 1790 to 1795, and from 1807 to 1821, during which period this letter was written. In Very Good Condition: creasing; darkened along upper edge; light ink from another letter placed on top while damp.
