Jane Webb Loudon (1807-1858), horticultural and miscellaneous writer. In addition to Prose and Verse (1824) she published anonymously The Mummy! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century (1827), a pioneering work of science fiction that brought together political commentary, Egyptomania, and interest in technology. She accompanied her husband, John Claudius Loudon (1783-1843), the landscape gardener, on his journeys. Her books were part of an effort to reduce her husbands debts. Jane Loudons most successful work was The Ladies Companion to the Flower Garden [1841, and many later editions].
