Before Sevastopol, 27 November 1854. 1½ pages 9 x 7 inches, in fine condition, stamp of the Commander in Chiefs Office. A rare letter from Before Sevastopol (found among the papers of Field Marshal Sir Charles Yorke (1790-1880)), written by Lord Raglan (1788-1855), commander in chief of the army in the Crimea, a few weeks after the Battles of Balaclava and Inkerman. Lieut. Macneill has been doing duty with the 13th Lt Dragoons and he is a promising youth. He is the son of the eminent Civil Engineer Sir John Macneill who enjoys a high reputation in Ireland and who has urged Sir John Burgoyne with who he has had much influence in publick matters to beg me to bring the case before the General Commanding in Chief which I have great pleasure in doing.
