Cambridge, [Mass.], 1878. 1-1/2 pages, in ink, on a single sheet. 12mo. Fine. 1-1/2 pages, in ink, on a single sheet. 12mo. On His Translation of "Las Coplas" of Jorge Manrique. Longfellow considered the 15th-century Spaniard's poem, "Coplas por la muerte de su padre" to be the "most beautiful Moral poem" in the
Spanish language. His translation of it in 1833 became his first book (v. BAL 12054) and in this letter, written nearly a half century later, Longfellow wriites:

"...The lines you send me are from a Spaniish poem by Don Jorge Manique, on the death of his father.
"If you have at hand a copy of my poems, you will find there a translation of the whole piece under the [/title of "Coplas de Manrique"
"The version you have sent me differs somewhat from mine, and I think it is froma Review, of which the writer unknown to me ...".
