German-born American cellist with the Berlin Philharmonic and then the Chicago Symphony Ochestra under Theodore Thomas; in 1918 he resigned from the CSO when accused of pro-German activities, the stigma of which led to his pianist wife Mathilde's placement in a sanitarium and then her suicide by drowning in Lake Michigan in 1921. AMuQS, 1p, heavy stock 3½" X 2½" card, n.p., n.y. [1900]. Very good. Mild age toning; small mounting trace at each corner. Steindel was apparently asked for a snippet from a composition by an admirer, for at the center of this heavy card he has affixed a 2 3/4" X 1¼" slip bearing three small, neatly penned measures identified in his hand as "Beethoven op. 56." Below the slip, Steindel signs boldly.
