About This Item

Chicago, Illinois: University of Chicago Press, 1996. First US Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Type: Hardback First U.S. Edition Hardcover in Very Good Condition with a Good Dust Jacket. Translated by Rodney J. Payton and Ulrich Mammitzsch, based on the 1921 Edition of "Herfsttij der Middeleewen". Few who have read this book in English realize that 'The Waning of the Middle Ages', the only previous translation, is vastly different from the original Dutch and incompatible with all other European-language translations. Now, for the first time ever, the original version of this classic work has been translated into English. Illustrated with 36 pages of historic Plates, b/w, on coated paper. One of the most famous works of history, Johan Huizinga presents a brilliant portrait of life, thought, and art in 14th and 15th century France and the Netherlands. Black cloth with bright and sharp orange titles to spine, very clean and unmarked, lower edge near heel and heel lightly rubbed; sewn binding tight, solid, square, with sharp corners. On the rear endpapers, on the page tips, there is a brownish stain, otherwise the internals are in fine condition. Jacket is clean and bright with lllustration: 'Etienne Chevalier and St. Stephen', by Jean Foucquet. Upper edge with chips, rear upper edge with diagonal tear, tape reinforced. 467 pages with Notes, Bibliography and Index. 6.5 x 9.5 inches. 1996, University of Chicago Press, Chicago, Illinois.
