About This Item

Original Manuscript . Paper Wraps. Very Good/No Jacket. THE AVENUE GOES TO WAR (in three volumes); by R F DELDERFIELD; C1950; PAPER WRAPS; VERY GOOD, HAND CORRECTED TYPESCRIPT This is the author R F Delderfield's pre-publication hand-corrected typescript of his novel The Avenue Goes To War (published in 1958). It comes from the estate of a close friend of Delderfield, and I have various other Delderfield items yet to be catalogued. The typescript comprises three hand-corrected volumes, bound in blue paper with red spine, on American Letter Size paper. Each volume has a typed title pasted to front cover: THE AVENUE GOES TO WAR by R F DELDERFIELD. Each volume also has a handwritten title: MASTER COPY, VOL.1, VOL. 2, and VOL. 3. This volume is very much a work in progress, the books have copious handwritten corrections in blue ink throughout in Delderfield's hand, with numerous crossings out and substitutions. As an example of the thought processes of a meticulous and inspired writer, it is a fascinating and unique document that will sit well on the shelf of the collector or the researcher into this 20th Century literary figure. It will also sit well in a university library. This is a genuine one-off - connected to a major 20th Century literary figure. Unique. About R F Delderfield: Ronald Frederick Delderfield (12 February 1912 - 24 June 1972) was an English novelist and dramatist famous for works such as To Serve Them All My Days and the 1951 movie Worm's Eye View which starred British blonde bombshell Diana Dors. His three volume novel sequence A Horseman Riding By (1966-68) was made into a popular tv series in the 1970s. He is also less well-known as the author of The Bull Boys, on which the very first Carry On movie, Carry On Sergeant, was based. He is hailed by many as an understated genius whose literay legacy is well established.
